2019 State of #MacroSW

By Rachel L. West

2018 was a big year for #MacroSW and we have an even bigger plan for 2019. We held 39 chat last year. On average 61 individuals participated in the chats (up  63.07% from 2017) with chats averaging 1,735,743 impressions (a 76.21% increase).

In November #MacroSW became a Benefit Corporation in New York State. This will enable us to seek out funding to support #MacroSW’s growth. It was a deliberate process that leads to discussions about #MacroSW’s immediate and long term future. Which brings us to 2019.

Chats start back up the week of January 27th. The Lunch & Learn chats, launched last October, returns on Tuesday, January 29th at 12:00 PM EST. It will be hosted by #MacroSW  Partner Sunya Folayan. Sunya will be leading a discussion on the Advantages of Home-based Business for Macro Social Workers.

The weekly Thursday night chats return January 31st at 9:00 PM EST. On that night I will be hosting the next installment of the Social Action series. Social Action 105 will focus on Locality Development.

In the coming months, chats will cover a wide variety of topics including public transit and human rights, the citizen question on the 2020 census, and macro social work licensing. You can find out what topics are coming up by visiting and bookmarking our chat schedule page.

In the first part of the year, we will be working on a plan to expand the chats so that social workers from outside North America can more easily participate. This includes adding topics pertaining to macro practice social work outside the US.

The podcast that launched last summer will continue.  We have recorded 12 podcasts so far. You can access the podcast on the following platforms as well as the blog.

For years there has been a dearth of workshops that provide macro practice content. This year the #MacroSW partners will begin developing workshops and webinars that provide macro content that all social workers can use in practice. We will also work on research and position papers.

We appreciate everyone who has supported us on this journey and hopes you will continue with us in 2019. If you happened upon this post by chance we invite you to join us on a chat. You can find out how to do that here.

Hey everyone! I’m back from winter break, and so is #MacroSW, the project of which I am a partner. I’ll be updating my blog here this spring, and I’ll also continue to cross-post from the MacroSW.com site.
